Norwich City column: Stuart Webber needs to convince City fans that he is the right man for the job

Well, I was wrong.

In fact, what should be of greater to concern to our sporting director is convincing fans that he is the right man to oversee that change.

Simply put, the atmosphere inside Carrow Road during last Saturday's 3-0 defeat against Swansea was toxic.

From the second Russell Martin’s side took an early lead, the anger and frustration around the ground built and built – most of it channelled towards Webber.

By the time the final whistle was blown, I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say most people had already left for home.

Look, everyone has to shoulder some of the blame for this season’s failings. Dean Smith, David Wagner and not least the players. Nothing has been good enough.

But at the top of that list comes Webber.

After all, it was he who appointed the head coaches and he who has presided over years of failed recruitment that has ultimately led to the sorry state of affairs we currently find ourselves in.

As I’ve said before, I’d argue the last time we had a successful transfer window was in the summer of 2018, when Teemu Pukki, Tim Krul and Emi Buendia were signed.

Five years has now passed – and you’d be hard pressed to name a single player to arrive since then who has made a lasting impact. Webber needs to be held accountable for this.

There is no doubt the 39-year-old has done some great things at this football club, his work to develop our training facilities should be particularly applauded.

But it feels like the relationship between Webber and the supporters – which has been difficult at the best of times – is rapidly becoming unsalvageable.

At the very least, Webber needs to come out and outline how he intends to take this club forward.

Whether that will be enough, only time will tell.
