PICTURE GALLERY: Eye Scouts raise thousands with annual duck race

Crowds flocked to Eye for the chance to be crowned champion of the town’s annual duck race.

People lined the banks of the River Dove to cheer on their allocated entry on last Saturday, with hundreds of rubber ducks making their way downstream in the showpiece event.

The race is a major fundraiser for the Eye 1st Scouts, generating thousands of pounds every year. This year, it made more than £2,000.

Scout group helper Leonie Ryle said: “We had 800 ducks go into the river, with around 500 of them sold to see who would win.

“It was such a great turnout, with around 350 people there. Many of them have been coming along every year since it started.”

The popular race was started by the Scouts in 2011, having previously been organised by Eye Town Hall.

Ms Ryle said: “The money raised will help the group so much. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported the event and those that made it possible.

“Thank you to our sponsors, Harrison Edge Estate Agents, Agrovista, Beech Architects and Hawthorne Developments for contributing to cash prizes, as well as The White Horse at Stoke Ash and The Fox and Goose in Fressingfield.”

The 1st Eye Scout Group meets at its Wellington Road headquarters for its cubs on a Monday, scouts on a Tuesday, beavers on a Wednesday and explorers on a Friday.
