Plans submitted to demolish Bethel Chapel in Diss

Plans have been submitted to demolish a chapel and build three new houses in its place.

Bethel chapel, on Victoria Road in Diss, closed down permanently following a final service on December 31 due to dwindling congregations and the deteriorating condition of the building.

Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches is now seeking planning permission for residential redevelopment of the site which would include up to three new houses, parking and improved access on to Victoria Road.

The report submitted reads: “The site has not been used in an efficient manner for several years. The site has been substantially underused, and is now entirely unused.

“Moreover, the nature of the site is such that it does not make a meaningful or effective contribution to the social cohesion of the town or community.”
