Walsham shock title favourites

Walsham-le-Willows sprung an early-season surprise by beating Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division title favourites Stowmarket Town by the odd goal in five on Tuesday night.

AT THE DOUBLE: George Bugg

It was a particularly memorable victory for ex-Stowmarket striker George Bugg, who scored twice – including the winner in the closing stages.

That win followed on from Saturday’s 3-0 triumph on the road at Gorleston, where a Bugg brace and Reece Clarke did the damage.

Those two results mean Walsham, under the management of new boss Trevor Newman, head to Wroxham tomorrow sat third in the table (3pm).

* In the First Division North, Diss Town crashed to a 4-0 defeat on the road at Fakenham.

Two of the home side’s goals were scored by Luke Priestley, who spent last season with the Tangerines.

Jason Cook’s men will aim to bounce back when bottom-of-the-table Felixstowe & Walton United Reserves visit Brewers Green Lane tomorrow (3pm).

* Harleston Town sit in third position following their 2-2 draw with AFC Sudbury Reserves.

Playmaker Scott Roberts and Kyle Baker were on target for Adam Gusterson’s team, who travel to Diss’ conquerors Fakenham tomorrow (3pm).

That is followed on Tuesday by a trip to fellow promoted side Mulbarton Wanderers (7.45pm).

* Newly-promoted Scole United marked their return to the Hadley & Ottaway Anglian Combination Premier Division with a 4-0 win over Beccles Town.

Alex Blakeley, Kai Hewitt, James Harrison and Bradley Hunt all netted for Scole, who followed that up by playing out a 1-1 draw with Long Stratton on Tuesday, when Connor Kerry was on target.

Next on the agenda for Scole is a home clash against Acle United tomorrow (2.30pm).

* In Division Five South, Scole United Reserves recorded a 2-1 victory at the expense of their Harleston Town counterparts.

Harry Brookes and Ryan Perry were the goalscorers for Scole’s second string, while Joshua Riding responded for beaten Harleston.
