Diss Rugby Club start their Counties 1 Eastern Counties season at home to local rivals Holt this weekend

Nick Greenhall is expecting a big crowd at Mackenders as Diss Rugby Club finally get their season under way against rivals Holt this weekend.

Diss have had to wait patiently to get their new Counties 1 Eastern Counties campaign up and running, after their first two fixtures were both postponed.

Last weekend’s planned trip to Ipswich YM was cancelled, with Ipswich’s pitch not yet fit for action and the home side not contact ready.

It means Greenhall’s charges will now open their 2022/23 fixtures on home turf against Holt tomorrow (3pm), as the two Norfolk sides renew their rivalry with a first meeting in almost three years.

“It’s a local derby and it should be a good game to start the season,” the Diss head coach said.

“Holt have come up from the season before and it looks like they’re playing really well.

“They’ve made a strong start to this season as well with two wins, while we’ve not played yet.

“I’m expecting lots of people will be there observing, which will be good to see.

“Hopefully we can put on a performance for them and keep them happy and keep them watching.

“Holt will want to do the same and I expect them to bring a lot of people as well.”

After finishing second from bottom in London 2 North East and suffering relegation in 2019/20, Holt bounced back in style last season.

Diss’ rivals were crowned champions of London 3 Eastern Counties with an almost perfect record of 17 wins and one defeat.

Holt will arrive at Mackenders tomorrow sitting top of the early table, after starting their campaign with bonus-point wins over Thurston (38-10) and Shelford II (48-19).

Diss II are set to start their Eastern Counties Division One North campaign with a trip to Beccles tomorrow (3pm).

Diss III, who beat Watton 79-22 last Saturday, visit West Norfolk II in Eastern Counties Division Two North action tomorrow (3pm).
