Kerrison is crowned schoolboy champion
Joe Kerrison has once again showcased his burgeoning boxing talent after being crowned the 65kg National Schoolboy champion.
The Mendham-based ace, who represents Lowestoft Amateur Boxing Club, got his hands on the title at the Bristol Sports Academy after securing a unanimous point victory over 2014 champion James Metcalf from the Hard and Fast Amateur Boxing Club of Barnsley, Yorkshire.
At the opening bell Kerrison came out and scored with sharp left and right combinations but Metcalf responded with his own sharp left jabs as the pair were equally matched in height and reach.
The Suffolk fighter was sharper and more accurate as he forced the Barnsley boxer on to his back foot with long lefts and rights but again Metcalf came back with a two handed assault only for Kerrison to retaliate with his own onslaught before moving off strongly with straight left and right punches.
In the second round Metcalf took the fight to Kerrison but the skilful Lowestoft boxer slipped and blocked and came back, scoring solidly with a host of clean punches.
By the end of the round the Yorkshire-based fighter knew he was in a contest with a durable skilful opponent who matched him punch for punch as he connected with solid lefts and rights until end of the round.
The third round saw both boxers rush to the centre of the ring throwing non-stop punches at each other but as the round progressed it was Kerrison who was the stronger and more accurate of the two as he forced Metcalf back onto the ropes time and time again.
At the end of the bout the judges were left with no doubt in their minds as Kerrison was awarded unanimous decision to clinch the title.
As a result of his title success Kerrison has been invited to box for England in The Tri Nations Tournament in two weeks in Wales.
