Diss Town suffer another defeat in the Thurlow Nunn League First Division North to March Town United
Despite opening the scoring for the second week in a row, Diss Town slipped to a 3-1 defeat on Saturday, this time away at March Town United.
The Tangerines’ early passing play in Cambridgeshire was pleasing to the eye, effective in creating openings and using the full width of the pitch as the ball was played across the firm surface.
And the pressure finally told in the 15th minute when Diss broke the deadlock.
Stephen Vincent played the ball in from the right, which caused confusion within the home ranks.
Virgilio Leitao had a shot from four yards out blocked by Simon Dalton, but he reacted quickest to fire in the rebound.
Leitao lost his footing when another good chance fell his way soon after, before the hosting Hares equalised in the 37th minute.
A free-kick into the Diss box broke free and Rob Conyard pounced to score.
In the second half Diss goalkeeper Jake Hayhoe kept the scores level for a while with two brilliant saves inside a minute.
In the 70th minute he changed direction to push a header from Casey Logan around the post and dived low to his right to deny the same player.
However, his resistance was finally broken in the 78th minute by a Jack Rawson shot that looped up and into the net.
The scoring was completed two minutes into stoppage as Diss pushed men forward, leaving Conyard the chance to head in his second goal of the contest.
Tomorrow, fourth-from-bottom Diss will look to record their first Thurlow Nunn League First Division home victory since August 25 when Downham Town will be their visitors (3pm).
* Up the other end of the table, Harleston Town are now 13 points clear at the summit following their 1-0 win away at AFC Sudbury Reserves.
Nathan Stone was the match winner, keeping his cool from the penalty spot to earn Adam Gusterson’s side the victory.
And they made it 14 straight wins in all competitions on Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory at Felixstowe & Walton United Reserves in the First Division Knockout Cup.
Kyle Baker got the ball rolling when he rounded off a swift counter-attack, with Nicky Howell making it 2-0 after rounding the home side’s goalkeeper.
The scoring was completed in the second half by Sam Borrer, who converted a cross from Josh Riding.
Harleston are back in league action tomorrow away at Swaffham Town (3pm), who are the only side to have beaten them this season.
* Ninth-placed Debenham LC kept up their positive run of form in recent weeks with a 3-0 win at Ipswich Wanderers last Friday.
Lamell Howell took his goal tally for the season into double figures, while Bradley Austin and Matt Poxon also netted for Leon Moore’s Hornets.
The result also kept up Debenham’s positive defensive record of late, having now conceded just one goal from their last five matches in all competitions.
On Saturday Debenham will play host to a Cornard United side buoyed by beating second-placed Mulbarton Wanderers 3-2 last time out (3pm).
That is followed on Tuesday by another home match – this time against Leiston Reserves in the First Division Knockout Cup (7.45pm).
