Robin puts his lockdown passion into full focus with first exhibition

For many people, wildlife and the beauty of our natural environment became a sanctuary during the difficulties of the last two years.

That is especially true of Robin Brown, whose time in the Norfolk countryside sparked a love for wildlife – and unleashed his passion for capturing it in still form.

Robin found the loss of freedom and routine of lockdown a challenge, with his mother, Zoe, noticing that his concentration span was affected as he struggled to stay focused.

But this all changed when Robin, who had never taken a photograph before, asked to borrow his mum’s camera phone on their daily walks – and quickly discovered a love for capturing the wonders that exist within the natural world.

The youngster, from Norwich Road in Denton, was so taken by wildlife photography that he quickly moved on to a professional camera – with some spectacular results.

Mrs Brown said: “Robin now knows the names of a large number of Norfolk’s bird life and is never happier than when he has his camera in his hand.

“If he could have it on him at all times, he would. His attention span has also improved due to the attention to detail he takes in his photos.”

The young photographer’s fascination for birds was inspired by birdwatching sessions with his grandad, Tony, who got to see some of his grandson’s work before he died in 2020.

Now the Alburgh with Denton Primary School pupil, who said he wants to take up photography as a career, has teamed up with family friend and fellow photographer Nick Jermy to put on an exhibition of his work at Denton Village Hall later this month.

Thirty-seven-year-old Mr Jermy said of the exhibition and the chance to collaborate with Robin: “Lockdown gave us an opportunity to have a closer look at the world around us ... I certainly did, and I think this is what the exhibition can be a celebration of.

“It’s been so nice to see the enthusiasm Robin has shown for his new-found hobby of photography. He certainly has a keen eye and it will be great to see his work displayed in all its glory.”

The event will be raising money for the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, with donations welcomed and artwork available to purchase.

Proceeds from tea, coffee and cake sales will also go towards the trust, with exhibition sponsor Flint Vineyard in Earsham providing guests with wine.
