Memorable Eye twinning BBQ after woman faints and falls into fish pond
An Eye woman who fainted and fell into a fish pond at a twinning barbecue has thanked its guests and the emergency services for their help in what will probably be one the town’s more memorable events.
Nearly 80 people attended the barbecue, a record, in the garden of Andrew and Joy Evitt, which was organised by Eye and District Twinning Association. The north Suffolk town is linked with Pouzauges in the west of France.
It is a lovely event and I probably ruined it!
Rosemary Berry, wife of town councillor Richard, who lives in Brome Avenue, said she was “highly embarrassed” after fainting and ending up in the pond, but heaped praise on all those who helped her, from visitors to emergency services and hospital staff.
She blamed the turn on being dehydrated following a 20-mile bike ride earlier that day.
“I did not realise I was going to go out,” she explained. “I just fainted.
“I had to get past some people and went the wrong side of them and went into the pond.
“I was pretty quickly pulled out of the water, spat out a mouthful of water, and quickly came round.
“They were all absolutely brilliant. Someone insisted on coming to the hospital with me.”
Three paramedics and two firefighters had arrived at the scene and artificial respiration was given.
Mrs Berry went to Ipswich Hospital as a precaution but was deemed fit and healthy and returned home later that day.
“I probably should have drunk more after the bike ride,”she continued.
“My body said enough is enough, simple as that.
“It is a lovely event and I probably ruined it!”
Proceeds from the event are expected to have surpassed £450.
A party from Pouzauges is due to visit Eye in the Spring of 2017.
