Diss CofE Junior Academy praised for fostering caring atmosphere after inspection

A junior school has been praised for being “a place of dignity and inclusion” in its latest inspection report.

Diss Church of England Junior Academy was given the recognition by inspectors after its Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS).

The school, which has a high proportion of children with special educational needs, English as an additional language and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, was praised for its educational vision.

Jane Trampnow, who carried out the June inspection, said: “Wellbeing is at the core of the school’s approach and the pastoral and mental health offer is extensive.

“This means that pupils and staff know that they have somewhere to turn to in times of need. As a result, the vision to promote an atmosphere of warmth and care is fulfilled.

“Parents from a variety of backgrounds and beliefs remark that they are treated with respect. They are supported in their own faith practices.”

The report also praised the school’s leadership, saying they were “ambitious for their pupils”.

It added: “They are strongly motivated by the vision to express love in action.

“They do this by guiding pupils to manage their emotions, to care for and value one another and build community.

“Well-trained staff expertly apply restorative behaviour practices and pupils are confident that their voices will be heard in any conflict.”

The academy’s executive headteacher, Jo Cerullo, was also praised in the report for “striving to promote a culture in which life can be immeasurably more than imagined”.

Mrs Cerullo said she was pleased that the inspector was able to see the true heart of the school.

She added: “I still feel privileged every day to be part of such a dedicated workforce and welcoming community, who always go above and beyond to ensure all children get the most out of school.”

The site is one of 16 academies within St Benet’s Multi-Academy Trust and, due to it being a Church of England school, has to have an inspection every five years.
