Mixed form for Walsham-le-Willows as they draw with relegation-threatened Great Yarmouth Town in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division

Walsham-le-Willows’ seemingly relentless march in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division has faltered, with just one point from the last six on offer.

The side who, just one week ago, were sitting in third position in the league have since dropped to fifth with Saturday’s 4-3 away defeat to Newmarket Town compounded by Wednesday night’s 2-2 home draw to 19th-placed Great Yarmouth Town.

They host Haverhill Rovers on Saturday (3pm) looking to return to winning ways.

Manager Trevor Newman said his team looked ‘lethargic’ in hosting the Bloaters midweek, and were fortunate to salvage even a point from the encounter.

He said: “This is now a critical point of our season, I hope it won’t but our season could go off the boil now.

“We need to get a reaction on Saturday, we really need to put in a better performance or our fortunes could change quickly.

“Luck is often on the side of teams getting good results. If those good results stop for too long though, so will the luck.

“If it wasn’t for Dan (Stobbart) in goal, we would have conceded at least three goals in that last 10 minutes or so (against Yarmouth) - we were dreadful.

“We wouldn’t have had any complaints if they’d beaten us by two or three. If they hadn’t lacked a bit of composure in front of goal, we would have been beaten.

“We lucked out, we just weren’t at it at all. And luck is probably the only good thing I would say about the game.”

Walsham started Wednesday’s encounter the stronger and it looked like a matter of time until they converted one of their chances before the visitors put a spanner in the works with a goal from a corner after 21 minutes.

The Bloaters struck again just five minutes later with an almost identical goal as Walsham found themselves defensively muddled at set pieces.

Sam Peters scored 10 minutes later with a lone run down the left wing before finishing it off to leave the score at 2-1 at the break.

Ryan Gibbs then equalised in the 65th minute, getting on the end of a shot rebounding off the right post to hit it into the bottom left corner. Great Yarmouth then had a succession of chances in the final 10 minutes, with Stobbart making at least two critical stops.

“I’m not sure why were weren’t on it to be honest, I’m not sure if the whole ‘doing well’ tag has got in a few heads,” Newman added.

“I will start to worry if we have another performance like that with Rovers. We just looked a bit lethargic and lacking in enthusiasm,

“We were on the ropes and I don’t feel that Great Yarmouth were cut-throat enough.

“We were there for the taking but they seemed happy with a draw.”

“Maybe it’s a sign of the respect we’re starting to command.”
