Diss Town well off the promotion pace against high-flying March Town United

Michael King said this match against promotion favourites March would be a good yardstick to see how close his side are to competing at the top of the table – and after Saturday's game, he will probably think they are quite a way off the pace.

You couldn't fault the Tangerines for effort, but they didn't test Hares keeper Charlie Congreve at all and were restricted to half chances against a side that looked like they could always step up a gear if needed.

After a dull opening 10 minutes, March slowly got a grip on the game and created chances throughout the first half that were not taken, the best of which saw captain Danny Emmington crash a header against the bar after 43 minutes.

At the other end, Spencer Cawcutt should have done better after 24 minutes when he failed to get on the end of a Jack Hutchinson free kick which was missed by keeper Congreve, and Bry Mullen scuffed his shot in the 35th minute when well placed.

March started the second half on the front foot too and scored after 54 minutes when a Diss defender, worried by the presence of prolific strike duo Jack Friend and Craig Gillies, turned a cross from the right by Emmington into his own net. Two minutes later and it was 2-0, Friend rounding keeper Conor Nicolle to slot home.

But Diss didn't give up and had the best of the final 20 minutes. Kieran Hagan burst through only to lose control as he was one-on-one with keeper Congreve, and then, the same player saw a drive flash wide with the visiting keeper flat footed.

And their best chance came four minutes from the end when Mullen rounded the March keeper and fired towards goal, only for his effort to be blocked by centre back Jamie Short.

The result sees Diss drop out of the top six to eighth place in the table ahead of Saturday's trip to pointless bottom side Wisbech St Mary (3pm).

DISS: Nicolle, Wilson, Race, Creamer, French, Hutchinson (Woodhouse 73 mins), Peek (Maloney 27), Taunton, Cawcutt (Ali 73), Hagan, Mullen.
