Norwich City column: Renaissance under David Wagner is helping to bring smiles back to faces at Carrow Road

I had the pleasure of spending last weekend in Florence.

The Italian city is renowned for its historical beauty, a billing it certainly lives up to, as any visitor would testify.

It is also famed as the home of the renaissance period - and right now we are experiencing a rebirth of our own at Norwich City.

Under the leadership of David Wagner (who in this scenario plays the role of Leonardo da Vinci), we are falling back in love with our football club.

Gone are the dark days of tepid, dross displays - replaced by a brand of attacking, aggressive football that we have long romanticised about.

Wagner is not the sole protagonist in this story, he has been ably supported by a group of players hungry to buy into his methods.

Last week I wrote about Kieran Dowell and how he has emerged from the shadows to take centre stage.

But he is not alone in being given a new lease of life in this post Dean Smith era.

Among those to benefit is Onel Hernandez, who has started both league games under Wagner.

Like most, I thought Onel’s days at Carrow Road were numbered.

While a real fan favourite, he has found himself on the periphery in recent years.

Much of that owes to his inconsistency in the final third - and I’m sure the Cuban will openly admit he has found it hard to recapture the form that saw him play such a crucial role in the 2018/19 promotion campaign in the Championship.

But there are signs that he is starting to burst into life - and the goal at Coventry last weekend will bring him confidence as he looks to establish himself as a regular in this team.

Whether it will be enough to earn Onel a new contract to extend his stay at the club beyond this summer, only time will tell.

But it’s great to see him - and the rest of the boys - playing with a smile on their faces again.
