Norwich City column: Ed Seaman once again calls for change in management after latest defeat to Watford
When Ben Knapper put pen to paper on his Norwich City contract in early October, I’m sure he couldn’t have imagined the crisis he would be walking into six weeks later.
While a few defeats had certainly soured some of the early season promise, it looked as if David Wagner’s side had at least taken some steps forward from the previous campaign.
But since then, results and performances have continued to deteriorate at an alarming rate, to a point where we are currently an absolute embarrassment on the pitch.
We’ve witnessed plenty of rubbish over the last few months, but for me the dismal display at Watford on Tuesday night was arguably the worst of the lot.
From about 15 minutes onwards, it was shambolic. No heart, no spirit, no cohesion. Nothing. We couldn’t even string two passes together.
We set ourselves up in a defensive manner, but were carved open time and time again with absolute ease.
As for the substitutions, I mean come on, what is sticking Liam Gibbs up front going to achieve? It stinks of desperation from a head coach who is fresh out of ideas.
I could spend the rest of this column ranting about the performance, but I don’t want to waste my breath.
What I will say is that it’s been obvious for some time that Wagner needs to go – and the last week has only served to reaffirm that.
When Knapper walked through the door, I could just about understand his desire to gain a perspective of things from within the club before making any decision on the future of our head coach.
After all, Knapper is a relatively young man, stepping into the biggest – and easily most senior – role of his career.
But if what he has already seen in his short time in charge isn’t enough to tell him that change is desperately needed, then questions have to be asked about his judgment.
