Attleborough Boxing Club’s Charley Davison wins England Boxing National Amateur Championship title
Attleborough Boxing Club’s Charley Davison has been crowned champion in the Female Under-54kg category at the England Boxing National Amateur Championship Finals Day in Manchester, writes Oscar Johnson.
The Olympic hopeful defeated Chadwell St Mary’s Nina Hughes on a split decision, and her coach Jon Dennis praised the mother-of-three for her work in and out of the ring.
“It’s fantastic. It’s a great achievement. She’s done so well to balance family life with her boxing,” said Dennis.
Following her national success, Davison’s next competitive bout will be in Scotland in May, where she will face the best competitors from all over Britain. Dennis also confirmed she will drop down to a lower weight category - Under-51kg - for future fights.
“She will fight in the Three Nations in May, hopefully she can become the best at her weight in Britain. She is going to drop down to Under-51kg,” he explained.
By dropping to the lower weight category, Davison will put herself in contention for Olympic selection, as Under-54kg is not currently an Olympic category.
“We have done tests and are sure that she can compete safely at the lower weight. She wants to inspire her kids and her dream is to compete at Olympic level.” Dennis added.
Davison’s next amateur fight is likely to be at Attleborough on May 4, although no opponent has been confirmed. Following that, her next competitive bout will be in the Three Nations later that month.
