Meredith's heroics not enough for Old Bucks

Old Buckenham’s (221-9) good run of form in the Norfolk Cricket Alliance Premier Division was halted on Saturday by Brooke (225-8), who won through by a slender two-wicket margin.

Batting first, Glen Meredith was the star of the Old Buckenham innings as he finished on 55 not out from 57 deliveries.

As the away team’s innings approached a conclusion, the number six batsman unleashed a succession of boundaries, including a six over long-on to bring up his half century.

Opener Matt Bint (37), Amith Sarma (39) and Jack Grant (28) also made useful contributions as Old Buckenham posted 221-9 from their 50 overs.

In defence of their total, the Old Bucks bowling attack took wickets at regular intervals after Brooke’s opening pair of Ben Watson (25) and Charlie Grisley (46) put on 61 for the first wicket.

Rob Austin, Chris Howes and Matthew Heuschneider took two wickets apiece as the visitors produced a decent performance with the ball.

However, the Brooke batsmen proved themselves to be up to the challenge and eventually got themselves over the line after 49 overs and with two wickets in hand.

It ended a winning run of three matches for Old Buckenham, who sit seventh in the table with a return of 114 points from their 10 matches in 2018.

They will look to get back on the winning trail tomorrow when they play host to Stow (12pm).

Newly-promoted Stow are currently in fourth position, having chalked up four wins this term.
