Ipswich Town column: Comeback win against Port Vale on Tuesday night was a joy to watch

And breathe… in a week which saw matches against Charlton Athletic and Port Vale as simply must wins, Ipswich Town have come out the other end six points better off with two completely contrasting victories at Portman Road.

Saturday’s demolition over Charlton Athletic was pleasing, of course it was. But for me the victory against a stubborn, resilient Port Vale is where I got the most joy.

Now that may sound silly and don’t get me wrong, I would love for Ipswich Town to win 6-0 every single week! But as we approach the final four games of the season, I think we all know we’re in for more testing and difficult games such as the one we had against Vale on Tuesday night.

I have to give credit to The Valiants, as for 53 minutes they did a complete number on Kieran McKenna’s side and although their time-wasting and off-the-ball antics were not pretty to behold, they were more than deserving to be in the game at that point and had managed an almost perfect away performance at Portman Road. But cometh the hour, cometh the Nathan Broadhead, as our silky Welshman bailed us out of jail to get back in the game.

Nathan Broadhead’s arrival in January was certainly one that caught the eye, not just from Town fans but from the rest of the league. Over £1m was spent and although I think we all knew we were bringing a quality player in, I’ve actually been quite surprised by just how good he actually is.

A cool finish from a Wes Burns cross got us back on level terms pn Tuesday night and the composure he showed to step up and riffle that pressure penalty just inside of the post was exceptional. A very talented player who will no doubt continue to be an asset for both Wales and Ipswich Town.

We look a proper team now and proper teams bounce back, are resilient and show character and this team has got an abundance of that.

I suppose the only disappointment of Tuesday night was that Plymouth Argyle managed to grab a late victory themselves and surely now do look a good bet for automatic promotion. But as I’ve said before and will no doubt say again, Ipswich Town just need to concentrate solely on themselves and know that if we keep on winning, then it will not matter what those around us do.

The next two games are tough, you don’t need me to tell you that. But Town have already shown they can go and beat teams in the top six away from home in Bolton and Derby and have to feel confident heading up to London Road that they can do the same.

Truth-be-told, I’m a nervous wreck and I’m sure I’m not alone in that. I’m sure there are many Town fans like me who were maybe too young to properly remember the last time we had a season like this, so I’m not really sure what to do with myself! But one thing I do know for certain is that we’ve got a superb group of players all fighting for the badge with a top class manager at the helm and with those ingredients, anything is possible. Up the Town.
