Important September’s momentum is not wasted
For all of the optimism an unbeaten September has given Norwich City, it is important that Daniel Farke’s side get back to winning ways.
Defeat against Stoke last time out was City’s second game without a win, and while that statistic is no great cause for concern, it would be naive to downplay the importance of momentum in football.
City’s performances in recent weeks are a prime example of that – the extra zip and swagger brought around by consecutive wins was clear for everyone at Carrow Road to see.
Statistically, we are entering a period that has seen City come unstuck in recent years.
Since relegation from the top flight in 2016 (including this season), City have only won three of 11 October matches (27 per cent) – compared to 12 of 16 in September (75 per cent).
The situation is even more bleak in November, with City winless in seven.
However, despite a tough run of fixtures – starting at Nottingham Forest tomorrow – I have every faith this Norwich side will not suffer the same autumnal despair.
Following a two-week international break, Farke will have a number of decisions to make, especially when it comes down to the fitness of his players that have been selected to represent their countries.
While no-one enjoys the break from domestic football, the rest has come at a good time for the likes of Alex Tettey and Todd Cantwell.
In the same breath, it would be wrong to ignore the form of City’s international stars.
Take Teemu Pukki, who after bagging two goals for Finland during the September break, scored in three consecutive games for City, two of which were winners.
Jamal Lewis is another to have thrived on the international stage in recent times, and is fully deserving of his new City contract.
