Chairman hopeful Harleston Town's appeal against relegation will be successful

Harleston Town may still be digesting the fact that they have been relegated down to Step 7, but chairman Adam Mullin is hopeful that the club’s appeal will be successful.

News broke on Sunday that Harleston had been demoted – likely back to the Anglian Combination leagues – by the Football Association “due to failure to achieve required ground grading”.

It followed a successful debut season for the club in the Thurlow Nunn League First Division North, which saw them score more than 100 goals on their way to finishing second, as well as lifting the First Division Knockout Cup.

From Harleston’s point of view, their inability to meet the necessary groundwork deadlines was due to the fact they play on a council-owned pitch, and therefore extra approval is needed before they can carry out any work.

However, they have now been given the green light and are confident that the improvements will be completed within a matter of weeks.

No date has been set for a Wembley hearing yet, but Mullin is confident Harleston have a good case as they fight to stay at Step 6.

“The council have to do their due diligence. They do not just work for the Harleston Football Club, they work for everyone in Harleston,” he said.

“It means certain things take longer but that is the nature of the beast. We are just thankful to them for all of their help.

“We are going through the appeal process and we believe we have a good case because we have been held up by a process.

“Hopefully they look at the fact that the work started as soon as we got approval and that it will be done by the time the appeal comes around. We will actually have some other work done ahead of schedule.

“It is frustrating because we had such a good first season in the league but I understand everyone’s point of view. We will have to keep our fingers crossed because it would be shame for the hard work not to come off.”
