Hornets buzzing with new off-the-pitch set-up

Just a matter of weeks after things were looking bleak for Debenham LC, the club is now planning for an exciting future.

Steve Sherwood announced towards the back end of the 2017/18 Thurlow Nunn League First Division campaign that he was stepping down from his position as chairman.

And with no obvious replacement waiting in the wings, there was a suggestion that the club would be unable to operate at Step 6.

However, after a series of meetings the club not only has a new chairman in Chris Conway, but also a vice-chairman, treasurer and a committee that now totals 16 members.

With things now more stable off the pitch, manager Leon Moore is hopeful it will provide him and assistant boss Shaun Hunsdon with the platform to achieve their targets next term.

“There had been a lot of uncertainty – Shaun and I had no idea what was going to happen,” said Moore.

“We did not know if there was going to be a club to manage and even if there was, what sort of state would it be in?

“But to see that many people come on board is amazing and it is a real weight off our shoulders.

“Now, we can just focus on the football and not worry about things like team sheets and who is going to pick up the kit.

“The new committee is so proactive, it is like a breath of fresh air.

“We want to finish in the top six next season and the improvements off the pitch should help us with trying to achieve that.”

Looking ahead to 2018/19, Moore has held initial discussions with the squad that helped them to finish seventh last term.

A couple of departures may be in the offing, but on the whole the manager is confident most players will remain.

“We have had some brief conversations and the majority have said they are happy to stay,” added Moore.

“Two or three might leave, that is always the way, but the core of the squad will stay.”
