Framlingham Town manager Liam Abraham looks ahead to Suffolk Senior Cup final clash with AFC Sudbury Reserves at Colchester United FC tonight
Liam Abraham believes an exciting final lies in wait for his Framlingham Town side when they go in search of a first CNet Training Suffolk Senior Cup triumph tonight (7.30pm).
The Castlemen take on league rivals AFC Sudbury Reserves in the decider of the county cup competition, which is being held at Colchester United’s JobServe Community Stadium.
History is on the line for both teams as they bid to add their name to the list of winners for the first time to a cup which dates back to the 1880s.
For Abraham’s Fram it will be the club’s second ever appearance in the final, and first for 27 years, having lost out 3-0 to Grundisburgh in 1996.
Tonight’s clash pits the second and third highest scorers in this season’s Thurlow Nunn League First Division North against each other, with the third-placed Castlemen netting 93 league goals, while AFC (8th) struck 86 times, with champions Heacham the only side to score more with 96 goals on their way to lifting the title.
“We had a little walk round the stadium last week which was nice and we’re just really excited for it now,” Fram boss Abraham said.
“Hopefully we can end the season on a high. It’s the first time in 27 years that the club has got to the final.
“The players have done really well and we’ve got one more game to go now.
“Obviously we want the win, but just the occasion and being in the final and giving ourselves the opportunity to win something is huge.
“In recent years the club has been involved in the national competitions like the FA Cup and the FA Vase, but outside of that the Senior Cup is as big as it’s been in terms of cup competitions.
“It’s really important and we’re just trying to put our name on that list of winners now really.”
Fram’s hopes of an historic promotion and cup double were halted last month, following a penalty shootout defeat in their First Division North play-off semi-final at home to Harwich & Parkeston.
But Abraham and his players can still write their names in the club’s history books with wins against Westerfield United (3-1), East Bergholt United (3-1), Henley Athletic (2-1) and Claydon (2-0) setting up a final showdown with Sudbury for Senior Cup glory this evening.
“Both teams like to attack,” the Fram boss said of tonight’s opponents. “If you’re coming to watch you’re going to see two teams giving it a serious go.
“Neither team will have tactics to try and shut the other team out and see the game through.
“Being an academy side they will have plenty of training sessions and patterns of play sessions. They’re certainly looking to try and score goals and we do exactly the same.
“We’re certainly not a defensively set up team. It should be a really exciting contest.”
Fram will be missing Cyrus Thorpe and Josh Lucraft (both suspended), along with James Ross, Charlie Howlett and Will Aldis (all cup tied) for the final at Colchester.
