Biggs sets himself new targets

James Biggs has already enjoyed plenty of success in 2018, so much so that he has been forced to reassess his targets for the remainder of the campaign.

The Diss Golf Club member, who is the Suffolk Amateur champion, has managed to get his hands on two county titles since the turn of the year.

But the undoubted highlight was his triumph in last month’s Lagonda Trophy – an event previously won by former world number ones Luke Donald and Lee Westwood.

That success on the national scene handed Biggs a world ranking – ticking off another of his season objectives – and has resulted in him having a rethink.

“At the start of the season I wanted to win a national competition and gain a world ranking – I have already done both of those,” said the 22-year-old.

“I have also picked up some wins in county events so it has been a great start.

“Now it is about looking forward and setting new targets.

“I would love to win another national tournament.

“It will be tough, but the results have shown what I can do.”

Having first picked up a set of clubs at the age of 11, Biggs has been honing his skills for half of his life.

However, he believes improvements to the mental side of the game are a leading factor behind his positive form.

None more so was this evident than last weekend when he came from being seven shots off the lead at one point to capture the Todd Cup on a second extra play-off hole at Rookery Park.

“I had to birdie the 17th and 18th to force the play-off,” added the Roydon resident.

“I have learned a lot playing in these competitions.

“In previous years I was probably a bit impatient, tried to force things and that is when mistakes happen.

“At Rookery Park I was not putting too well for parts of the weekend, but my game was good and so it was just about biding my time and waiting for it to come good, which thankfully it did.”
