Across the Border: Canaries are now reaping the rewards of ‘Farkeball’

Carrow Road has played host to some dramatic finishes in recent years but perhaps none as improbable as last weekend’s comeback against Millwall.

Trailing 3-2 heading into stoppage time, goals from Jordan Rhodes and Teemu Pukki snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, sparking wild celebrations among players, staff and fans alike.

The win was a real testament to the character and never-say-die attitude of this young Norwich squad, having earlier missed a third penalty in as many games and quite literally thrown away a 2-1 lead.

It is often said that late goals are the hallmark of a successful team and with every passing week, this City side looks more and more capable of going the distance.

That’s not to say there aren’t areas to work on, having struggled to deal with the physical nature of Millwall’s offensive play, but after five wins on the bounce it would be pedantic to focus on such issues.

Beyond the euphoria, what for me was most remarkable was the manner of City’s two stoppage-time goals, which is a nod to the work of Daniel Farke and the vision he has had for this team since day one.

It may have taken time, and criticism along the way, but City are now bearing the fruits of Farke’s possession-based football – or ‘Farekball’ as it has been coined.

It’s worth noting that Pukki’s last-gasp winner was the culmination of an eight-pass move which started with a free-kick in our own box - a situation that would have seen most teams lump it forward and hope for the best.

While the finish itself owed a little to fortune, the passage of play leading up to the goal, including an inch-perfect through ball from substitute Mario Vrancic, speaks volumes for the confidence Farke has installed in his players.

Farke himself has never been more popular among the Carrow Road faithful. Long may it continue.
