Goal machine James Bemrose hoping to help fire Long Stratton to Hadley & Ottaway Anglian Combination Premier Division title
Higher-league clubs may be beginning to stand up and take notice, but Long Stratton striker James Bemrose is confident that he is in the right place for this stage of his development.
It has been a campaign to remember so far for the 18-year-old, who with 17 goals to his name is the second leading goalscorer in the Hadley & Ottaway Anglian Combination Premier Division.
And on top of that, the teenager has even saved two penalties during emergency stints as a goalkeeper.
It all means that his name is getting around the area, but he is in no hurry to be leaving his home village club as they battle it out for the title.
“There has been a bit of interest from a higher level and a few people have said I could do it,” he said. “But I am happy at Long Stratton and it feels like everyone respects me there.
“This season I have managed to get a regular spot in the team and I am playing 90 minutes most weekends and that has been massive for me. I have a lot to thank Long Stratton for, so many people have helped me there including the manager Adam Burroughs and former manager Steve Race.
“The likes of Wal Bambridge, David Ball, Ben Nicholls, my brother and my parents as well – they have all done so much for me and hopefully I can score the goals that helps us win the league.”
It is not only with Long Stratton that Bemrose has made an impact this season.
The forward was a member of the Norfolk Under-18s squad that won the FA County Youth Cup under the guidance of former Harleston Town boss Adam Gusterson last term, and he is also a regular fixture in this year’s side as they go in search of historic back-to-back triumphs.
“It means a lot to be part of the county side. We played the final at Stoke City’s ground last year but I did not get on the pitch,” added the former Long Stratton High School pupil. “I am now getting in the team regularly and I am getting to know the other players more. It is great to be contributing to the team.
“We are in the semi-finals and hopefully we can become the first side to defend the trophy.”
Bemrose was a part of the Stratton side that beat Bradenham Wanderers 2-0 on Saturday. Tomorrow the joint leaders will play host to second-from-bottom Hellesdon at Manor Road (2pm).
