Tommy Pateman and Charlie Jay bid to join Attleborough Boxing Club team-mate Isabell Price in next week's national finals

Two of Attleborough Boxing Club’s Eastern Counties champions will be bidding to join team-mate Isabell Price in the finals of the England Boxing National Development Championships this weekend.

Tommy Pateman and Charlie Jay were both crowned Eastern Counties champions after victories in Billericay earlier this month, which secured their progress to the quarter-finals of the national event.

The duo return to action in Kent tomorrow, with Pateman, 16, facing Paul Coyle, of St Marys, for a place in the semi-finals of the Male Development Class A 57-60kg weight class.

Jay, 16, who lives in Harleston, goes up against Moulescombe’s Alfie Cracker in his quarter-final in the Male Youth 63.5-67kg category.

“Tommy lives in Cambridge and trains with us,” Jon Dennis, Attleborough’s head coach, said.

“He’s at the very beginning of his career, but he’s got a natural style.

“Charlie joined us in the latter part of last season and he’s boxed in Latvia and he’s boxed all round the country.

“He’s making solid progression. He’s a development boxer and you won’t see the best out of him for one or two years, but he’s certainly making the right noises and putting the right effort in.”

Wins for Pateman and Jay this weekend would see them advance to the finals weekend of the Development Championships, which are due to be held at the Spiceball Leisure Centre, in Banbury, the following weekend.

The semi-finals take place on the Saturday, followed by the finals on the Sunday, when the national champions for each weight class will be crowned.

Attleborough already have one boxer through to next week’s finals in Price, 16, who lives in Tibenham, and will be competing in the Female Youth 63-66kg class.

It will be a step up in weight class for Price, who earlier this year won the Female Youth Cadet Under-63kg title in the England Boxing National Youth Championships.

“Isabell is already a national champion and this time she’s had to go up a weight,” Dennis said.

“Unfortunately there are no opponents for Isabell in her natural weight, but she’s prepared to make that step up.

“She’s a young lady with aspirations of doing well in the sport.

“She’s a good kid, robust, rugged and strong and we see her doing well in the sport.

“I’m proud of every single kid that pulls on a vest at Attleborough Boxing Club.

“I’m proud of every person that turns up here to train, even if it’s just for some social activity or to get fitter or a bit more confident.

“Not just me, the club committee are proud of each and every one of them boxing or not boxing.”
