Former Eye, near Diss, butchers hails Stuston farm shop switch as "best move we've ever made"

A family-run butcher’s shop is enjoying a renaissance of fortunes after moving to a prime location at Place Farm in Stuston.

G Shurey and Son had been based in Eye for around five years, before the pressures of electricity prices sparked a drastic switch to breathe new life into the business.

“The overheads, and especially the electricity, forced us out,” said owner Graeme Shurey.

“But we were offered a chance to move in to a farm shop in Stuston, where we would be alongside other businesses, and the rent was much more affordable.

“I don’t like change and, at first, I wasn’t sure, but, once we made the move, I realised it was the best thing that could have happened to us.

“The shared business space means people who came to buy one thing might see us and pick up some meat, too. As well as building a customer base in Stuston, I would say 95 per cent of our regular customers from Eye have stayed with us.

“We’re very thankful to them. We try to ensure that they always get honesty, a personal touch and top-quality meat whenever they walk through the door.”

The business, which sources all of its meat from within 33 miles of the shop, also runs its own sausage school.

Customers can book sessions to see exactly how sausages are made, as they are talked through the best ingredients to use, before sitting down to have a go at making some themselves.

“The sausage school has been really popular,” said Mr Shurey.

“We show them the whole process and talk about the importance of great quality ingredients, which you don’t get with supermarkets, where you don’t know what’s in the food.

“We take pride in being honest with people. A customer recently asked for an expensive fillet steak and I suggested trying rib eye , which is cheaper but has so much more flavour. I offered them their money back if they didn’t enjoy it. They came back the next week fully converted.”
