Landlord of The Falcon in Pulham Market wants pub to soar again
A businessman is hoping he can be the driving force behind returning a village pub to its former glory after being won over by its location.
Des Scarborough has run The Falcon in Pulham Market since January and, now that he has his feet behind the bar, is determined to help it fulfil its full potential.
The 45-year-old, who hails from Northampton, already has pubs in High Wycombe and central London, but was lured to the east.
“I had been looking for a pub in Norfolk for some time as it is such a fantastic county,” he said.
“Then the brewery, Punch Pubs, came to me and told me about The Falcon and asked if I would be interested in taking it over. I jumped at the chance.
“It sits beautifully in the Waveney Valley and the community feel of the pub really drew us to take it on.”
Fresh from a £162,000 refurbishment, trade at the pub is picking up week by week, with Mr Scarborough keen to appeal to a wide audience.
“We are serving good food, real ales, Sunday lunches and have live music, too,” said the father-of-two.
“We have a young and local team of staff, including our pub manager Tom Procter, as I feel it is really important to give local people job opportunities.”
Mr Scarborough has 25 years’ experience in the pub trade and has worked and lived all over the world, including in Gran Canaria, the French Alps, Spain and Rio de Janeiro.
“I am here for the long run as it seems the pub has passed through a few hands, but I want to bring stability to this great place,” he said.
“We want to get darts and pool teams organised here, do more quiz nights and integrate ourselves into the community.
“I cannot thank the locals enough for their continued support and I have had people further afield say they have heard good things about The Falcon, so I hope this helps us in the future, too.”
