Diss will be marking national refugee week with a series of free events.

Starting last Friday, three local organisations will be celebrating the contribution made by people coming to this country.

Diss Town of Sanctuary, Diss Amnesty and Stand up to Racism East will share an information stall in Mere Street from 10am to 11am during the week.

The new space above No 8 Market Place will also be hosting three events.

Tomorrow, at 7.30pm Diss Museum manager Basil Abbott is giving an illustrated talk on the different cultures that have moved here over the years – from Romans to Americans.

At 11am that same day, fabric artist Caroline Hyde-Brown will be showing how embroidery can capture the natural world.

And on Thursday at 10.30am women of any age are invited for an hour of trying out dances from different countries.

Saturday is an opportunity to see a 2023 film about the relationship between an exiled Palestinian film maker and Gaza. That’s Life is Beautiful at 1.45pm upstairs in the Corn Hall.

Brian Guthrie of Diss Town of Sanctuary is pleased that Diss is taking the opportunity to welcome refugees.

He said: “The town is more diverse than you might think and it’s right that we celebrate that fact – both by giving out relevant information and by staging a few events that reflect the very positive benefits.”
