Shooting, archery, tennis coaching, dinghy sailing and kayaking are activities associated more with an exciting holiday, not a PE lesson.
But the Waveney Valley Partnership Schools, which includes St Edmund’s Primary in Hoxne and Mendham Primary, will offer the activities as it seeks to provide “the very best” in PE, according to executive headteacher Andrew Alders-Dunthorne.
It starts with a qualified tennis coach tutoring, a six week tennis coaching course at the Withersdale community centre courts for Mendham pupils.
Older pupils at Mendham can join an extended schools target shooting club provided by Mr Alders-Dunthorne who is also a NSRA (National Shooting and Rifle Association) youth coach.
At St Edmund’s Primary School the Partnerships PE leader and National Archery coach, Claire Gammon, is teaching archery as part of the curriculum. The schools will also be taking to the water in June with a dinghy sailing and kayaking course at Weybread pits – supported by leaders from the Royal Yachting Association and 1st Fressingfield Scout Group.
