Harleston Primary Academy puts together church display to support the preservation of nature

Harleston Primary Academy is teaching its children about the importance of preserving our natural world, with butterfly symbols and a display, which will soon adorn the walls of St John’s Church.

The display is being put together in connection with an initiative by Redenhall and Harleston Town Council called Nature Recovery...We Can, which will go live on March 11, coinciding with celebrations to mark the end of work to improve the town’s streets for shoppers.

The project will see 450 decorated butterflies – created by the children and put together with pledges to help wildlife – span the interior of the church.

Reception teacher Bev Beaumont said: “Ian Carstairs came to the school and led an assembly to launch the project.

“He discussed pollution, climate change and the disappearance of butterflies. He taught the children a butterfly hand symbol that they can use to raise awareness of the issue.

“As a follow up, the school has decided to hold a curriculum day every year to learn about the environment, to keep these issues in the children’s minds.

“We will also be creating a butterfly display to be shown in St John’s Church, which all the children are currently working on.

“Every child in the primary phase of the school was given a template to colour in, and will write out pledges relating to the environment.

“We plan to have 450 of them to build a 3D display, which will be in the shape of a butterfly.

“We aim to have that completed and installed at the church before March 11.”

The town council has created its nature initiative to establish a formal framework to embrace all positive environmental work, from every aspect of the community, under a common goal to play a part in addressing the crisis facing nature.
