Secretary and treasure of Thorndon Bowls Club retires

The first woman to join – and subsequently help shape – the committee of a Suffolk bowls club is set to retire.

After 50 years as Thorndon Bowls Club, secretary and treasurer June Wright is passing on the mantle to Chris Rowson.

“June is very organised and efficient and she helped shape the club,” said club captain Margaret Thorpe, from Diss. “She’s one-of-a-kind – she is Mrs Thorndon.

“She will be greatly missed and certainly won’t be forgotten.”

The former postmistress from Cotton joined the committee in 1969 after her late husband, Peter, suggested her for the role.

"It's been kind of a second home to me, I am going to miss it," said Mrs Wright.

"My two children were basically brought up on the bowls green."

After June took over 50 years ago, many more women began to join the club.

“The club in its entirety has been extremely grateful for what June has done over the years," said Mrs Thorpe, 73.

“We said time and again, nobody else could’ve done what June has done for the club, single-handedly.”

After the annual meeting on November 5, June is now looking forward to returning to the club as a spectator, without having to worry about anything.
