OBITUARY: Mrs Joan Cartwright
A large congregation attended a service at the church of St Michael and All Angels, Occold, to celebrate the life of Winifred Cartwright, always known as Joan, on August 26.
The Rector, the Rev Dr Guy Sumpter, who officiated, gave the tribute on behalf of the family and the community.
Joan and her husband David, moved into their new house in Occold 42 years ago and soon adapted to the social life of the community. David joined the Bedingfield Bowls Club and Joan the Good Companions Ladies Club. After only 20 years David died suddenly, but Joan, with the help of her many friends, carried on her social activities, joining the Redlingfield and Occold Women’s Institute, the Parochial Church Council and became a regular producer and helper at the weekly WI market, now the Country Market, in Eye Town Hall.
She loved her garden, spending many hours tending her flowers and shrubs, and was a keen member of the Stoke Ash Gardening Club. In later years she continued to meet up with her friends at the many social activities including harvest suppers, Luncheon Club and tea parties, maintaining her lively sense of humour.
After a short illness Joan died at the age of 82 at Ipswich Hospital. She will be greatly missed by all village residents.
