Plans have been submitted to build a block of flats overlooking Diss Mere.

Under the scheme, two four-bedroom flats and one three-bedroom flat would be built, which would also include nine parking spaces

The three storey building would be tiered down the grass slope towards the Mere, next to the wildlife garden and floating boardwalk.

Two storage buildings behind the Happy Palace Chinese restaurant would be demolished to make way for the scheme, which would be finished, in the main, in glass and metal.

It would be the second development overlooking the Mere, with work on a new Wetherspoon pub due to start in March.

In its application to South Norfolk Council, the developer states: “The design follows the format of similar properties at Mallard Court, to the east, albeit, our design shows a modern, contemporary elevation, largely glass and metal finishes, which will reflect the trees and surrounding Mere and skyscapes.”

The site is next to a number of listed buildings, including 23 St Nicholas Street, known as Tudor House, a 15th-century timber-framed building.

The developer has scaled back plans for the building to four storeys after consultations with Diss Town Council, which has now asked for a deferral on the new full planning application, until after January 17.

The application adds: “The contemporary elevations, although a contrast to the existing traditional street-fronted buildings, complement the site and we feel will be a positive addition to the area, while retaining all the Mere side trees and habitants.

Plans for a chalet-style bungalow on the site were refused in 2003.
