South Norfolk MP, Ben Goldsborough, to undergo treatment after shock skin cancer diagnosis
A Norfolk MP has revealed he is undergoing skin cancer treatment after a surprising diagnosis.
Ben Goldsborough, Labour MP for South Norfolk, was told he had stage two melanoma after a mole “drastically changed shape”.
The 34-year-old has already had surgery and is due to undergo a year of immunotherapy to boost his immune system to fight the disease.
Mr Goldsborough was elected as South Norfolk MP with a comfortable majority of nearly 3,000 at the general election.
Following his victory, Mr Goldsborough moved from Wales, where he had recently finished a spell as mayor of Flint, back into his parents’ home in Snetterton.
He noticed a mole on his arm had turned into a lesion shortly before Christmas after he scratched it on chicken wire fencing.
He told the BBC: “Being diagnosed is the worst out-of-body experience I have ever had. It’s like you’re present but not there at the same time.
“This is not one of the things you plan for, but so many other people are going through this and have got it far worse than I do.”
Mr Goldsborough said his prognosis “looks good” and he has already had surgery on his arm.
He said he still intends to carry out his constituency work to a “high standard” but warned treatment may impact some duties.
The MP has been praised for sharing his story by healthcare experts, including the British Association of Dermatologists.
A spokesman said: “Ben’s experience is a prime example of why it is so important to check your skin regularly for signs of cancer and to discuss any concerns with your GP.”
