I don’t know where Tim Bornett got the idea that ‘the impression is often repeated that the Burston School dispute was a strike by employees against their employer’ (Letters, September 11).

I have not personally heard this statement made before.

Tom Potter clearly stated in my interview with him that it was the children, with the support of the parents, that went on strike.

The Higdon’s were unpopular with the school management/farmers because children were taken out of school to pick stones to the detriment of the children’s education which the Higdon’s complained about. Also Tom Higdon was a trade union activist the whole time he lived at Burston and before that at Wood Dalling in North Norfolk, in fact he was instrumental in setting up the Agricultural Workers Union. The Rector was put out because they did not attend a proper place of worship, the church.
