Incidents of pollution drag down Anglian Water’s rating
An environmental review has told East Anglia’s main water company that it requires improvement, after determining that its current performance remains “well below expectations”.
Anglian Water received a two-star rating – out of a possible four stars – for the third consecutive year, in the Environment Agency’s annual report on England’s water and sewerage firms, which was published this week.
The Environmental Performance Assessment (EPA) found that Anglian Water was responsible for 307 pollution incidents – 11 of which were deemed serious – from its sewerage assets during 2023.
It comes after the firm was recently fined for failing to comply with statutory requests for records, as part of a wider investigation into non-compliance by water companies nationwide.
Sadia Moeed, area director for the Environment Agency in East Anglia, said: “We are disappointed that Anglian Water is a two-star company for the third year in a row.
“Where there is evidence of non-compliance, we will not hesitate to pursue the water company and take appropriate action.”
Environment Agency chairman Alan Lovell added: “For the nation to have cleaner rivers and seas, water companies must take responsibility to understand the root cause of their problems.
“It is promising to see some companies starting to accept their responsibilities, but it is evident that the pace of improvement continues to fall short.”
