Diss Youth FC on the hunt for under 9s to make history by launching first youth girls’ football team

A young footballer is hoping others will join her in making history for the town.

Autumn Edwards is the one, and only, member of a new under 9s girls’ Diss Youth FC football team.

The club put out an appeal around a month ago and were surprised only two came forward.

Kevin Edwards, coach for the boys’ under 12s said: “Women’s football is increasingly popular with the success of the Lionesses and we thought we would be inundated.

“We have also just upgraded the ground in Bressingham with a new clubhouse, pitch and car park, and thought it would be good to launch a girls’ team, for the new season - a first for the town,

‘The advertisement we put on Facebook page did ask for boys and girls, but we still thought more would come forward.

“We got two boys teams out of it to add to the other seven, which involves more than one hundred. But only two girls, one of whom has now joined a rival team which is already up and running.

“It’s a great team sport and involves friendship, teaches respect and football skills in a safe environment. Ideally, we’d have 10 to start to launch a seven-a-side, with
three subs - but more the merrier.

“Everything is funded, including the kits.”

The club is also looking for a potential coach for the team. They would be funded for their training after a DBS check.

The boys teams play all over Norfolk and Suffolk and have seen a number of successes. The girls would play on Sundays in the Norfolk league.

Autumn Edwards, eight, said: “I wanted to join to make friends and keep fit.

“I was she disappointed noone really came forward because I was looking forward to being in a football team. Beth Mead who plays for
Arsenal is my inspiration.

“Football is a fun way of making new friends and being outdoors.”

You can join by visiting the Diss Youth FC facebook page or by calling 07903840036

Kevin added: “We’re looking for players in school years three and four, as well as volunteers or a potential coach who’d love to help grow the team.”
