Harleston's guy competition helps families to enjoy the run up to Guy Fawkes night

Guys were dressed up in readiness for Bonfire Night this week as part of a competition within a town community.

Harleston Kindness Help Hub arranged the competition, in which families were encouraged to creatively dress up their own guy and put them on display in gardens and windows around the town.

Prizes of £20, £10 and £5, along with a goody bag, were paid out for the best dressed guys when the competition closed yesterday.

Lizzy Pegg, 41, of Maltings Drive in Harleston, helped to organise the event. “It’s a bit of fun for the town,” she said. “We wanted to get the whole community involved and to see guys in gardens all over town or at the windows.

“It’s important for mental health reasons for people to keep their minds occupied in such difficult times, but it’s also nice for the children to have something to tell their friends about at school and to be able to enjoy Bonfire Night while keeping safe.”

“We didn’t have quite as many entries as we had hoped for, but we’re thankful to the families who did get involved.”

Miss Pegg added that community groups in Harleston are looking to plan more safe events in the run-up to Christmas, reminding everyone to “watch this space”.

Lesley Earl, who is in her 50s and from Redenhall, was one of those who took part with her daughter, Rebecca, and grandchildren.

“It is a family tradition of ours to always make a guy for our bonfire every year,” said Mrs Earl, who was joined by grandchildren Skye, 11, Jack, six, Luke, five, Jacob, four, and Halle, two, as the families set about creating two effigies.

“When we saw the guy-making competition on Harleston Kindness Hub, we thought we would enter our creations so the community would see our efforts and so we could all have lots of fun looking at them.

“The children had a great time stuffing the guys with straw on the farm and found it highly amusing to dress one of the guys in granddad’s clothes. We had a really fun time.”
