Diss Town U13s game sees referee treated for facial injuries after attack by spectator




A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault after a referee was attacked at a youth football game.

The attack, which left the 50-year-old official with facial injuries, happened during the match between Diss Town U13s and Spixworth U13s and led to the abandonment of the game.

Norfolk Police said: “Police were called to Bressingham playing fields shortly before 11.30am on Sunday, following a report of an incident at a youth club football match between a spectator and referee.

“A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of assault and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning. He was later released under investigation while enquiries continue.”

After the game, Spixworth U13s fixtures were suspended, with the club posting a brief statement on its social media pages which said: “Spixworth Youth FC condemns the actions of a spectator at the U13 youth match.

“The club takes a zero tolerance approach to this behaviour. We have reached out to Diss to apologise and will cooperate with all investigations.”
