Diss Town Council pulls out all the stops to celebrate lollipop lady's 80th

A town’s longest serving lollipop lady has celebrated her 80th birthday – and has no plans to give up the job she loves just yet.

Yvonne Henson has been ensuring schoolchildren’s safe passage to Diss Junior Academy for the last 19 years, having also worked there as a dinner lady and cleaner.

The great-grandmother-of-two was treated to a special tea party to mark her birthday on September 13, when she revealed she has no intention of retiring.

“Thank you all very much for your kindness shown over the years,” said Mrs Henson, who lives in Sunnyside, Diss. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of my time at the school.

“I’ve done many jobs and enjoyed every single one. The children are what make my days so special and I’m hoping to continue for a few years longer yet.”

The tea party was attended by Diss mayor Eric Taylor and Clive Sinfield, who leads the local governance committee.

During the celebrations, Cllr Taylor joked about how Mrs Henson would often ask him to slow down on the roads in years gone by, giving him a stern finger wagging.

She was presented with a framed letter of recognition from the Diss Town Council, together with plants, flowers and gifts from her colleagues.

Headteacher Jo Cerullo said: “Yvonne is a vital member of our school, not only ensuring the children are safe crossing the road, but tackling any wayward traffic that doesn’t behave appropriately.

“We are lucky to have her as part of our team, and I only wish could have as much energy as she does.”

Richard Cranmer, CEO of St Benet’s Multi Academy Trust, which runs Diss Junior Academy, said: “Hearing about Mrs Henson brought a huge smile to my face.

“What an incredible contribution to society she has made over 30 years.

“My congratulations go to her for her 80th birthday, along with my heartfelt appreciation on behalf of all the young lives she has supported over the years.”
