Diss cancellation of Christmas lights switch-on event is announced

The ongoing threat of Covid-19 has caused an annual Christmas lights switch-on to be cancelled.

The decision was taken to call off the event in Diss after listening to advice from the government and the Public Health England and Health & Safety Executive.

The town normally hosts a gathering of around 3,000 people for the event each year.

In a statement from the Town Council, a spokesperson said: “Diss Town Council has not taken this decision lightly. Our festive Christmas lights switch-on is a well-loved event, and we know that it forms part of a very special annual tradition for residents and visitors.

“But maintaining social distancing for those 3,000 visitors during the event would be unachievable. Our priority must be the safety of everyone involved. So, with sadness, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel. The Christmas lights will, however, still be in place for all to enjoy.”
