The Depperhaugh Nursing Home in Hoxne officially opens new garden pergola

A grand garden project has officially been opened after a community came together to see it over the line.

The Depperhaugh Nursing Home in Hoxne welcomed residents, staff and generous donors to its pergola – the centrepiece of the new garden – on May 7.

The morning reception saw representatives from The Arts Society Diss, Jewson in Diss, and Street Forge Workshop, of Thornham Magna – a charity which offers activities for adults with disabilities – all of whom had supported the project.

Funding from the art society also helped to pay for flowers and shrubs in the a number of planters, which were made by Street Forge.

Home manager Debbie Reeve said: “The idea for the project started when our activities co-ordinator, Jane Steggall, visited a local voluntary group and got chatting to members of the arts society.

“They were very interested in The Depperhaugh and said they would like to support us in some way.

“They came and looked around the garden and I explained how a pergola would be a perfect addition – a place for residents and staff to sit and enjoy the special views.”

The home manager described the project as a real team and community effort; her husband designed the pergola, her gardeners and maintenance man prepared the area and an art society volunteer constructed it using timber that was all donated by Jewson.

She added: “I would like to thank everyone involved. It is great to have such marvellous community support and the pergola has received many compliments and is already being used by residents, staff and visitors.

“The art society is now talking about helping us with the next stage of the project, adding bird boxes around the site.”

The Depperhaugh, which was a former 19th century admiral’s house, was acquired by Kingsley Healthcare in 2008.

Founded by Daya Thayan and his wife Sumi in 1999, Kingsley Healthcare cares for more than 1,500 people across 36 locations.
