Abellio Greater Anglia, one of the main transport providers for south Norfolk commuters, started a major programme of carriage refurbishments and upgrades yesterday.
The company, which serves as the primary train operator for services connecting through Diss railway station, including lines between Norwich, Ipswich, Colchester and London, began modifying its intercity MkIII carriages, with the first of this improved batch due to be in use the first quarter of next year.
The enhancements throughout both first class and standard carriages will include the addition of plug points and new LED lighting, carpets, tables and seat covers, as well as the installation of upgraded environmentally-friendly controlled-emission toilets and the re-painting of the carriage interiors.
Jamie Burles, managing director for Abellio Greater Anglia, said: “We are delighted to begin this major refresh for our MkIII carriages, which will deliver a significant improvement in the travelling environment for passengers.
“We look forward to unveiling the first completed carriage, which is due to be in service in February 2015.”
The full scheme of refurbishments is scheduled for completion by the end of October 2016.
