Roydon: 75th anniversary of VE Day marked by tree planting

Volunteers gave the world’s climate emergency a helping hand when they planted 75 trees in an event organised to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

The project involved trees from a wide variety of deciduous native species, with the hope that the new saplings will provide a focal symbol for generations to come, of both remembrance to those who lost their lives in conflict and a celebration of the ending of the war in Europe.

A memorial stone will also be established on Brewers Green in Roydon in the near future.

Steve Jones, who is custodian of the green, said that he welcomed the initiative, adding that “it will add to the biodiversity of the green and will be another link in the establishment of green corridors for wildlife”.

Rotary club members from both Diss Waveney and Diss and District took part in the joint effort, with the presidents of each club taking part.
