Eye Bach Choir will be performing the St John Passion by J S Bach in Eye Church starting at 7.30pm, on Saturday, March 7.
It is said to be among the three greatest works composed by Bach. It was first performed in St Nicholas Church in Leipzig on Good Friday 1724, and tells the story of Christ’s betrayal, trial and crucifixion. In its day the performance of this music was a remarkable event. The telling of the Passion story was not uncommon in Germany at that time, usually focused on the spoken word to tell the crucifixion story, but here – possibly for the first time - was a musical account verging on the operatic. It consists of choruses and solo arias sung by soloists, reflecting on the sequence of events leading to the crucifixion, interspersed with meditative chorales, or hymns, aimed at focusing the listener’s attention on what took place and its implications for us all.
