Youthful Harleston fall at semi final stage
Harleston Magpies Under-16 Girls were knocked out at the semi-final stage of the National Indoor Championships last weekend.
Three wins from four group outings saw the Magpies qualify for the last four, where their challenge was then ended by Beeston.
Abby Gooderham and Lottie Summers both scored braces as the Magpies opened up with a 5-1 victory over Leicester.
Next up was Taunton Vale. who were beaten 8-0 courtesy of a Gooderham hat-trick, a brace from Tor Findlay and further goals from Anna Tighe, Lauren Rowe and Amelia Preece.
Pre-tournament favourites Surbiton were first up on Sunday morning and they inflicted a heavy 6-0 defeat on the young Magpies, leaving them needing a win next time out against York to book their spot in the semis.
With the scoreline locked at one goal apiece, Summers put Harleston 2-1 in front and from that moment they were in control of the contest, eventually running out 4-1 victores.
In the semis Harleston were paired with Beeston, who had won the other section.
It was Beeston that opened up a 2-0 lead, but Gooderham hit back to bring Harleston back into contention.
However. the Magpies were unable to find an equalising goal and they ended up falling to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the eventual champions.
n Diss Ladies recorded an 8-1 victory from their Norfolk Ladies Hockey Division 1 clash with bottom-placed Carrow II’s.
Nicki Day put Diss two goals to the good early on, before Toni Glover got two goals of her own and then Julie Glover found the net to make it 5-0 at the break.
Sam Ralph, Lucy Kershaw and Julie Glover added further goals after the restart, while Carrow pulled back a conslation as Diss moved into second position.
They are now one point adrift of league leaders Norwich City IV’s, who haved played one more matfch than Diss.
