Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright has been drawn to face Joe Cullen in the opening round of the BetVictor World Matchplay.

Twelve months ago, Mendham thrower Wright reached the semi-final of the sport’s second biggest competition, only to then be defeated 17-12 by eventual champion Michael van Gerwen.

This time around, his quest to go one better and secure a place in the final at Winter Gardens in Blackpool will begin against world number 36 Cullen.

The two players met in the quarter-finals of this year’s UK Open, with Wright coming out on top 6-4.

Overall, of the nine clashes between the pair, Cullen has triumphed just twice.

The tournament gets underway on Saturday, July 16.
