Harleston Magpies I won Saturday afternoon’s derby and the bragging rights courtesy of a goal in either half against their Dereham counterparts.

The hosts, and in particular CJ Edwards, started the encounter brightly.

A flurry of shots were aimed in the direction of John Livings’ goal during the early exchanges, but the Harleston stopper made a succession of saves to keep the scoreline level.

After soaking up the pressure, Magpies grew into the contest and went on to take the lead through Archie Winter.

The youngster picked up the ball deep in opposition territory, rounded the right-back and teed himself up for a volley that he sent home.

With the deadlock broken, Magpies dominated much of the contest, although it was not until five minutes from time that they made sure of the outcome.

A loose ball dropped kindly for player-coach Ben Wright, who saw his shot go in via a deflection.

Tomorrow, Magpies will aim to extend their unbeaten run to four matches when they travel to Cambridge University I (1.30pm).

n Harleston Magpies Men’s III saw their sequence of 19 straight home league wins ended on Saturday by IES III, who claimed a 2-2 draw.

Magpies were behind on two occasions, with goals from Gavin Cole and Jon Aldridge salvaging a share of the spoils.

Tomorrow, they host Pelicans II in a Division 3NE encounter (3.30pm).

n Harleston Magpies Mixed Team booked their place in the third round of the England Hockey Trophy thanks to a 6-0 win at Bourne Deeping.

Magpies were much the sharper of the two sides in the first half and had a 2-0 lead at the break to show for their pressure, with both goals coming from Maria Andrews.

Andrews completed her hat-trick in the second half, with further goals coming from Lizzie Clymer and Lucy Whiting (2).

Magpies travel to Letchworth in the next round on March 5.
