West features in England’s World Rugby Under-20 title triumph

Former Diss Rugby Club player Tom West came off the bench to help England win the World Rugby Under-20 Championship on Saturday.

West featured for the final 16 minutes of England’s commanding 45-21 win over Ireland in the final.

Northampton’s Harry Mallinder and Joe Marchant, of Harlequins, both scored two tries to help secure England’s third World Rugby Under-20 title in four years.

Following their disappointing Six Nations campaign at the start of the year, West and his fellow England youngsters have enjoyed an emphatic turnaround to be crowned champions at the weekend.

Head coach Martin Haag told the World Rugby website: “There were some outstanding individuals that came into the team to help it along.

“The individuals became a team and they bonded really well over the last few weeks.

“These guys have a bright future together, they’ve made friendships and some bonds that will last forever and it’s superb.

“The performance was outstanding. We adapted well to the transition between attack and defence and the way they handled the 80 minutes was a credit to the guys.”
