Chris West and Steven Cox won Sunday’s Snetterton Stage Rally in their Peugeot 306 Maxi after eight challenging stages, getting the Norfolk circuit’s 2017 season off to a thrilling start.

Driving the French hatchback that was made famous by World Rally tarmac specialists Francois Delacour and Gilles Panizzi, the winning pair defeated Motorsport News Circuit Rally Championship title contender Ian Woodhouse into second place.

Nevertheless, the runner-up was still able to gain some valuable points over championship leader and fellow Ford Escort driver Paul Swift, who holds a useful 39-point lead with three rounds to go.

It was a tough event for second-placed title contender John Griffiths, who could only guide his Subaru Impreza to 31st place overall, leaving him vulnerable to Woodhouse in the standings.

In the co-driver’s championship, Peter Littlefield remains the top contender, despite only managing a 20th-place finish with driver Steve Quigley in their Renault Clio 172 Cup.

However, his margin has been reduced to just five points over Joe Morgan, who despite finishing much further down the order in 49th place overall, was fourth in class compared to Littlefield’s eighth place.

The next major racing meeting to be hosted by Snetterton is the CRMC Classic Bike Championships, which are scheduled to take place over the weekend of March 18-19.
